President McAleese presents Awards to 2 County Carlow designers at Showcase Ireland

“The range of exhibits, the sheer excellence of our award winners even in these tough times, lifts our hearts and make us proud", said the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, when she visited Showcase Ireland last week.

Later she awarded two Essence of Ireland awards to County Carlow stars, Glenn Lucas Woodturning and Cel Design Jewellery, both from Bagenalstown, for “depicting through their design, production methods and presentation that which is unique about Ireland” Showcase Ireland was held in the RDS, Dublin and is a major exhibition and trading event for the €122m Irish Craft sector. There were 450 exhibitors and sales last year reached the €40m mark.

“We are delighted to congratulate both Glenn and Celine on their success here today”, said Michael P Kelly, CEO of Carlow County Enterprise Board. “Showcase Ireland is one of the most important events in Ireland’s craft and gift calendar, and participation here gives opportunities to meet 6000 buyers from around the globe. I hope Glen and Celine do very well from the high profile given by these well deserved awards.”

Glenn Lucas Woodturning On finishing school in 1993 Glenn Lucas began an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker (Carlow, Dublin, Germany) where he learned many new skills. Returning to Co Carlow in 2005 with his family, Glenn built a studio from which he runs a business that produces approximately 1500 fine crafted bowls per annum. In addition, Glenn is frequently invited to participate in national and international exhibitions promoting the best of Irish craftsmanship.
