None more so than Netwatch Systems, whose Managing Director, David Walsh, spoke of the vision and the adrenalin rush of creating and developing a business idea. “At Netwatch we are constantly innovating to get and keep a competitive edge…it can be exhausting but very few experiences can match the high you get from running a business”.
Michael P Kelly, CEO of CCEB, spoke of the opportunity that comes with change. “The high turnout at both the New Start and Express for Success events, highlight the commitment of people in the County to explore the opportunities, presented by the recession and those that will emerge post recession.”
Over 200 people attended the New Start Carlow event in the Seven Oaks Hotel on 26th May. The event was also sponsored by Carlow County Development Partnership and Carlow Kilkenny Skillsnet and included presentations on childcare, money management, local agency supports for business and networking.
On Tuesday 25th May, over 100 owner managers attended the “Express for Success” lunch. Blaise Brosnan, who, over the past 20 years has mentored many small businesses in the Region, emphasised the role of the owner manager in steering the business through both calm and choppy waters. “It is your skills in managing cash and managing staff morale and the culture you instill in your business, which determines its future”, he told his audience. The event also commended the success of all Ireland winners RapIT, the five students from Presentation College Askea who recently won the National Enterprise Awards at Croke Park, with a new device for wrapping headphones.
County Carlow’s future looms bright following the first ever Tata Challenge at IT Carlow which was facilitated by CCEB. This is a competition that combines innovative technology, business acumen and ethics. TATA, a world leader in IT consultancy has teamed up with IT Carlow and CCEB to pilot this project that gave 4th year Computing and Networking students an opportunity to devise an ethical solution to issues within their communities. The winning project outlined research into combining all three disciplines to create stay-at- home solutions for older people as an alternative to nursing home care.
